Penguin Computing Advances Open Compute Project Technical Leadership, Technology Platforms and Customer Adoption

Comprehensive OCP Strategy Drives Revenue Growth

FREMONT, CA - May 26, 2016... Penguin Computing, a provider of high performance, enterprise data center and cloud solutions, today announced a series of OCP-related achievements that demonstrate the transformative impact its OCP strategy is having on technical innovation, customer acquisition and revenue growth. “Penguin Computing has established itself as an early OCP technology and product leader in the years after Facebook established the Open Compute Foundation, and we’ve helped drive OCP adoption in financial services, big data analytics, federal government, higher education, cloud and manufacturing segments,” said Tom Coull, President and CEO, Penguin Computing. “This makes Penguin a preferred, go-to partner for technology leading OCP-based solutions.” Examples of Penguin Computing’s recent OCP-based customer wins include: The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) selecting Penguin Computing’s Tundra Extreme Scale (ES) series for one of the world’s largest OCP-based installations. This procurement under NNSA’s tri-laboratory Commodity Technology Systems program, or CTS-1, bolsters critical computing for national security at Los Alamos, Sandia and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories and was a major step forward for OCP product credibility. Penguin Computing and YJ America teamed for deployment of YJ America’s OpenStack infrastructure on Penguin Computing’s Relion OCP servers as part of its next generation data center infrastructure. An important element of this collaboration was Penguin Computing’s role as an active member in the OCP community and background as a pioneer in Linux systems. Bloomberg L.P., the international financial software, data and media company, engaged Penguin Computing with its rack supplier AFCO to implement OCP solutions for Bloomberg’s data centers. The focus of this collaboration is for Penguin’s Tundra sleds and trays in Bloomberg/AFCO (BOAR) racks, which were recently exhibited at the 2016 OCP Summit. Bloomberg, an early advocate of the OCP philosophy, expects benefits of flexibility, density and cost savings through OCP implementation in its data centers. Stony Brook University selected Penguin Computing based on several key factors, including the OCP benefits of easy extensibility, rack density and competitive cost structure. Density is a critical element due to space considerations and convenient serviceability, from the cold aisle, is extremely beneficial. The new “Seawulf” cluster entails 156 compute nodes and supports a wide range of applications for university professors and students in a dynamic learning environment. SBU sees the OCP design as the platform of the future, enabling them to reduce operational costs while taking advantage of the diversity of systems to come in the future. Penguin Computing’s OCP leadership in cooperation with its partners is providing customers with higher density, efficient and more flexible power options, a variety of heterogeneous platforms that can co-exist within one homogenous form factor, cooler running systems for higher reliability and more. Tundra brings a variety of innovations to OCP:
  • Designs with up 96 nodes per rack for better space efficiency and better thermal design
  • A 1U sled and tray design for dense Open Computing
  • Completely integrated solutions based on the Fidelity Technology Group-contributed Open Bridge Rack
  • Enterprise infrastructure improvements for OpenRack solutions, such as UL Listing for integrated racks and power systems, a network tray design to support multiple Ethernet and Intel® Omni-Path switches with minimum cable lengths, Asetek’s liquid cooling technology and 12V DC powered switches which eliminate the need for a PDU
  • A variety of compute and storage form factors: Relion Phi 1030 with single socket Intel® Xeon® Phi™ for HPC workloads; Relion 1930 E/G featuring dual socket Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 v3/v4 for HPC and general workloads; and IceBreaker 1906g with single socket Intel® Xeon® Processor D for distributed storage Penguin Computing’s aggressive OCP strategy is reflected in its rapidly increasing revenue from such designs.
Penguin Computing’s aggressive OCP strategy is reflected in its rapidly increasing revenue from such designs. A majority of the company’s 2016 revenues will come from OCP-based solutions. In addition to large scale OCP deployments, the market is broadening with opportunities for smaller organizations to realize operational efficiencies and cost advantages based on new designs. Penguin Computing has established itself as a market leader and indispensable partner to those seeking to adopt OCP. While Penguin Computing’s OCP-based wins have been impressive to date, current customer interest in large scale deployments in the latter half of 2016 and into next year are even more promising. Continued education in the marketplace will further bolster OCP product sales growth.
