SC24 – An Action-Packed Week in Atlanta for Penguin Solutions

The convergence of AI and GPU-based technology created an "explosion of excitement" at SC24, according to Mark Seamans, our VP of Global Marketing in an interview with HPCwire. This energy was manifested by the 18,000 attendees, almost 500 exhibitors, and plethora of technical sessions – contributing to the vibrant atmosphere all week.

Building on Penguin’s 25th anniversary celebration at SC23, this year we showcased our expanded capabilities under our unified Penguin Solutions brand, which now includes Stratus Technologies and SMART Modular Technologies. SC24 provided the perfect venue to showcase our end-to-end solutions designed to meet the needs of today’s enterprises as well as inspire tomorrow’s workforce to harness the power of AI and HPC.

Empowering the Next Generation

A highlight of our SC24 presence was showcasing our work with Georgia Tech and NVIDIA to prepare the next generation to be AI-ready with hands-on experience through a digital sandbox, Georgia Tech’s AI Makerspace. This important project democratizes access to accelerated computing infrastructure and provides students and faculty with AI training to thrive in an increasingly AI-driven landscape. Demonstrations at SC24

Penguin Solutions designs, builds, deploys, and manages high-performance, high-availability enterprise solutions, allowing customers to achieve their breakthrough innovations. This innovative technology was on display at SC24:

  • Penguin Solutions’ OriginAI® Infrastructure – a complete AI factory solution built on pre-defined AI architectures with predictable performance and ROI, now available with enhanced cluster management capabilities to address the needs of CIOs, data scientists, and other decision-makers.
  • Penguin Solutions Cluster Management Software – our smart, intuitive, and secure solution that simplifies AI and HPC cluster management, monitoring, and provisioning for tens to thousands of node while reducing complexity and operational overhead.
  • Stratus ztC Endurance® Fault Tolerant Platform – intelligent, predictive platforms that deliver breakthrough availability, expediting time to value and minimizing management costs.
  • SMART Modular Memory Technology – including CXL add-in cards for enhanced performance and memory capacity, NV-CMM technology for persistent memory and reliability, and DDR5 Liquid Immersion RDIMMs for demanding workloads in advanced cooling environments.

Speaking Sessions at SC24

Penguin Solutions CTO Phil Pokorny led two Exhibitor Forum sessions:

  • Innovative Data Center Cooling: Driving HPC/AI Advances and Sustainability – session goers learned about various cooling methods, when to deploy those methods, and insights on balancing building and sustainability goals. View the session here.
  • The New Era of Processor Design Innovation: RISC-V – attendees gained first-hand experiences with RISC-V, and secured insights on where the market and design will go as global implementation grows, and a realistic assessment of the state of products and timeline for HPC and AI performance hardware solutions. View the session here.

In addition, Dell hosted a joint session with Penguin and Georgia Tech from the show floor to highlight Georgia Tech’s AI Makerspace. The session invited attendees to learn more about this unique supercomputer hub dedicated exclusively to teaching students, and how it was designed, built, deployed, and is being managed today for Georgia Tech.

Student Cluster Competition

For the second year in a row, Penguin Solutions, alongside Dell this year, sponsored the University of New Mexico Roadrunners in the annual Student Cluster Competition. The student-led team customized a cluster with three nodes, each equipped with four NVIDIA H100 NVL accelerators, and was named a finalist in the 48-hour HPC-A-PALOOZA. Great job, team!

Beowulf Bash

As a Gold sponsor of the annual Beowulf Bash, Penguin Solutions and other industry leaders and innovators, kicked off SC24 at the World of Coca-Cola. Penguin CTO Phil Pokorny welcomed the boisterous crowd alongside fellow Beowulf Computing Cluster technologists Don Becker and Tom Sterling. Beowulf Bash attendees enjoyed food and music while concocting their own secret formula of Coca-Cola-based beverages.

Customer Reception

We want to thank AMD for sponsoring a wonderful customer reception on Tuesday night. Together, we hosted about 200 customers who joined us and enjoyed an evening of good food, drinks, and conversation at Terminus330.
