The Navy DoD Supercomputing Resource Center (Navy DSRC) recently announced the newest addition to their lineup of supercomputers – Nautilus.
Nautilus significantly enhances the DoD’s ability to tackle the most demanding and computationally challenging problems in various scientific disciplines including fluid dynamics, chemistry and materials science, electromagnetics and acoustics, climate, weather, and ocean modeling and simulation, among other applications.
By using complex applications on this specialized high-performance computing (HPC) systems, scientists and researchers can predict the behavior of engineered systems in complex environments and analyze patterns in physical systems including weather forecasting natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes.
In April 2022, Beowulf Cluster Computing was inducted into the Space Technology Hall of Fame during the 37th Space Symposium hosted by Space Foundation in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Penguin Solutions was inducted for its role in commercializing the Beowulf Cluster, revolutionizing high-performance computing by making it more accessible and cost-effective.
The original intention of the Beowulf cluster was to create a HPC solution for individual research scientists to conduct data analytics on experimental data coming in from satellites and for simulation of earth and space related physics problems.
Machines that could do these calculations were few in number and very expensive. The team was looking to lower the cost of simulation by using commodity hardware and "off the shelf" components to deliver similar performance at lower cost.
RADAR generates actionable insight in many environments—being located in aircraft, sea vessels, or ground stations. Applications vary from weather data acquisition systems to event detection systems to enemy targeting. Obtaining, processing, and exploiting RADAR data takes a number of highly powered and synchronized compute systems. Penguin's HPC systems use cutting edge processing and communication technologies that support the scalable compute required for any size RADAR system.
We actively supply solutions for C4ISR: Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance. In supporting intelligence dissemination for data analytics and mission planning, we have over 60 systems deployed in theatre on secure DoD dissemination applications.

Procured under NNSA’s tri-laboratory Commodity Technology Systems program, or CTS-1, the supercomputing clusters deployment bolstered computing for national security and brings together the computing capabilities and expertise at Los Alamos, Sandia and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories.
This contract provides NNSA’s Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program with high-performance computing clusters for its mission to ensure the safety, security and reliability of the nation’s nuclear deterrent without underground testing.
“These computing clusters will provide needed computing capacity for NNSA’s day-to-day work at the three labs managing the nation’s nuclear deterrent,” said Doug Wade, head of NNSA’s ASC program. “This tri-lab effort will help reduce costs, increase operational efficiencies, and facilitate collaborations that benefit our nation’s security, support academia, and advance the technology that promotes American economic competitiveness.”
This HPC and AI service for federal government agencies featured a complete software, hardware, and management platform which eliminates many of the performance, scalability, and security challenges associated with traditional cloud computing environments.
GovPOD HPC/AI Cloud is an on-demand, high-performance, cloud-based, secure HPC environment that flexibly supports AI, traditional HPC, and containerized work flows.
Federal government customers can harness the power of a high-performance, bare-metal, HPC environment in the cloud without the investment in a complex, lengthy, and costly on-premises, infrastructure solution.
